Guy Kammerer, band director at Wauwatosa West High School, has been selected by Civic Music Milwaukee's 2020 Music Teacher of the Year.
"I was surprised because I hadn't heard anything about it and here I was getting a call on a Sunday evening. As it sunk in, I was in a kind of denial that I was deserving of this recognition. Since then, it's become a truly humbling event," said Kammerer after learning he would receive the award.
Civic Music Milwaukee supports music education and provides performance opportunities for young musicians in the five-county greater Milwaukee area. Kammerer was nominated by colleagues at Wauwatosa West for the award.
"I must also thank the administrators as well as the students that wrote (letters of recommendation) along with my colleagues. I felt like I was set up for a surprise birthday party where everyone but myself is included in the plan!"
He and other 2020 Civic Music Educator Award recipients will be honored during a special MSO performance at the Marcus Center on March 14.
Kammerer says being a music teacher in Wauwatosa is easy to love when you're working with the "very best young people in the Wauwatosa School District".
"I'm passionate about my subject and the potential music has to improve the lives of our student membership," said Kammerer. "I love the real sense of community and "family" that we have developed through our love of music and the band activity."

As for what led the Civic Music Milwaukee Music Teacher of the Year to pursue a career in teaching, Kammerer will tell you music chose him.
"I always knew I was a teacher and musician. I can't imagine doing anything else with my life. Being a musician and educator is not something I do, but rather, it's who I am."
