Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Selena Marris

My name is Selena Marris and I am an art instructor at Wauwatosa West High School.  I have been with the Wauwtosa School District since graduating from Alverno College with degrees in K-12 Art Education and Art Therapy in 2001.  I began my teaching career first as a classroom assistant at the Detention Center School and then as an art instructor at the same school for one year.  I transferred to West in 2002 and it has been my pleasure to collaboratively build our award-winning art program with my art colleagues ever since.  I have taught many courses over the years including Art Foundations, Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Ceramics I and II, Metals, Sculpture, Illustration and Advanced Placement Studio Art. West is a wonderfully diverse place that I am proud to call my professional home!

It my honor to provide all of our art students with the chance to develop their artistic abilities technically as well as mentor students as they work to develop the 21st Century Skills of creative thinking, critical analysis, problem solving, and visual communication.  As our students take more advanced courses, they are challenged with open-ended prompts that encouage self expression, research, ideating, and planning. Many students enjoy taking an art course to diversify their high school experience and many others have gone on to major in art at some of the top art programs regionally and nationally. Our students have been recognized with top honor both at the state and national levels in the Scholastic Art and Writing Program and various other competitions.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring local parks and trails, reading a good book, doing sketchbook work, and spending time with my husband, two daughters, and my dogs.  I look forward to seeing you around the art department!
