Information

  • CROSS COUNTRY

WHO:  Any Whitman Middle School student, girl or boy, may be a member of our team.  There are No cuts, or substitutes – each member runs in every meet!

WHEN:  Our first practice generally begins the first week of school immediately following Labor Day.  We practice daily, weather permitting, from 3:30 – 4:50 PM.  I understand that it may not be possible to make every practice.  I do ask that when those occasions arise that I be informed the day before.  Being a team sport, we count on every individual to be at practice on a regular basis as well as participating in each meet.

TRANSPORTATION:  (Practice Days) All Students, with one exception, will need to arrange a ride home following each practice around 5:00PM. Transportation on Meet days is provided by bus for all team members to the race site and back to Whitman Middle School.

MEETS:  Our first meet is scheduled during mid-September.  A typical season averages 8 to 10 meets ending during the third week of October.

WHAT:  Cross Country is running long distance races “across the country” (at parks, on fields, through woods, etc.)  It is not “Track and Field”.  Meets are never held on tracks.  We do a variety of activities during our practices.  Workout activities try to promote proper stretching, running form and techniques, practice running vs. racing, endurance, and games to name a few.  Weekly mileage varies, averaging around 15+ miles when warm ups and cool downs are included.  Typically we compete in meets that range from 8 to 20 schools.  Some of the teams we compete against are from the SW (Muskego, Mukwonago, Burlington, Waterford) W (Brookfield, Menomonee Falls, Waukesha) and several of the North Shore Schools.

GOALS:  Fun and Individual improvement are two of our goals.  Each runner begins the season at his or her own level.   We then work on improving that level and becoming more competitive.  Most of our races cover a distance of 3,000 meters (1.85 miles) with shorter distances at 1.5 miles.

WHAT’S NEEDED:  You and your parent(s) must complete a Wauwatosa Participation/Physical Form or Alternate Year Form.  This form needs to be signed by the student’s physician and filed with our school’s main office.  Physicals are required every two years and need to be on file prior to an individual’s participation.  Also, each student and parent need to read the concussion information packet, sign, and return the form to the office.  In addition a nominal activity fee of $25 is charged by the district.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A GREAT RUNNER TO JOIN OUR TEAM, JUST A WILLINGNESS TO PUT FORTH YOUR BEST EFFORT, AND THE SPIRIT TO CARRY ON A TRADITION THAT IS STRONG AND ALIVE!
